A. Security Threats of The PV Solar Farms

  • The need for energy resources on earth is increasing day by day.
  • Therefore, the solar energy is increasingly becoming one of the major sources of renewable energy on earth.
  • In addition to that solar farms are constructed in areas like isolated, unmanned sites which dispersed over large geographical areas.
  • It is important that organizations are managed appropriately, considering the increasing levels of threats to investments of solar farms.
  • Perimeters for solar farms are often quite large and of irregular shape where a single security technology cannot cover all assets.
  • Thus, fiber optic based PIDS can be an ideal solution.
  • Against increasing threats, around the sites where solar fields are located, it is necessary to establish robust, reliable and secure perimeter detection systems (PID).

B. Application

  • If the solar fields are far away from each other and each is surrounded by fences, it may be necessary to install a separate system for each region. But in our application this is not necessary.
  • FOTAS D30 was especially preferred for this application.
  • With a FOTAS D30 dual channel system installed in a center, the fiber optic cable was enabled to travel in these areas.
  • The system was not used in cut resilience mode. That is, two channels were used for different solar fields by going to locations with two different cables. For cut resistance mode, two channels must travel the same fields, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise.
  • The fiber cable was allowed to pass underground and, in some sections, over the poles until it reached the relevant environment.
  • It was passed to the area to be secured and laid on fiber fences.
  • Passages and underground parts, places where detection is not desired, were determined and closed during artificial intelligence and calibration.
  • The system was made operational by turning the points we determined, such as the fence corner or fiber splice, into calibration points.
  • In addition, perimeter cameras were entered into the system and a pop-up was enabled when an alarm was given, thus detecting the presence of a threat at the time of alarm.

  • FOTASTM Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) system is a reliable long-range solution that provides early warning of perimeter activities of solar farms.
  • The DAS system can be installed either on a perimeter fence to detect climbing or cutting itself and also buried to detect approaching footsteps or vehicle activity.
  • The range of DAS systems (D30) is typically up to 30km per sensing fiber and the unit has 2 channels measuring 30km in either direction.
